Born in South Africa, Jonathan Schwartz (later Ariel) moved to Israel in 1969 after his family fled political exile; his father was a founder of the ANC’s armed wing. Trained in intelligence and disinformation, he served the ANC before returning to Israel in 1983, later advising both Israeli and South African governments. Invited back to South Africa by Mandela and De Klerk in 1990, he contributed to Mandela’s transition team and sensitive back-channel diplomacy that smoothed the transfer of power in 1994. After returning permanently to Israel, he held senior journalistic roles, consulted internationally on cognitive warfare, and published widely on politics, strategy, and security.
