Our TLC Reading Buddy Program

B’nai Torah Congregation’s Tzedakah, Learning, and Chesed (TLC) Program is at the heart of our commitment to community service, tikkun olam (repairing the world), and Jewish values. Through hands-on volunteer initiatives, TLC brings our congregation together to support those in need—whether it’s addressing hunger, homelessness, elder care, or education. One of our most impactful programs, the TLC Reading Buddy Program, provides a nurturing environment where young children develop critical literacy skills with the help of our dedicated volunteers.

Each week, B’nai Torah members visit Manor Academy Preschool, located inside Dixie Manor, a Boca Raton Housing Authority community that provides affordable housing to families with low- and moderate-income. Many of these children come from homes where books and reading are not always accessible, making early literacy support even more essential. Every Tuesday at 10:00 AM, our volunteers gather for group storytime, followed by one-on-one reading sessions with the preschoolers. By reading together, offering encouragement, and fostering a love of books, we help lay the foundation for their future success in school and beyond.

This program is more than just reading—it’s about creating meaningful connections between generations and strengthening our community. Volunteers leave each session knowing they’ve made a difference in a child’s life, and in turn, the children gain confidence, literacy skills, and the joy of learning. Through the TLC Reading Buddy Program, B’nai Torah continues to bring Jewish values to life, ensuring that education, kindness, and service remain at the core of everything we do.
